Humpback Whale Watching Byron Bay

Humpback Whale Watching, Byron Bay:

Each year from May to November, Byron Bay becomes one of the best places in Australia to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles — the annual migration of the humpback whales.

The Humpback Migration: Nature’s Grand Journey

Over 25,000 humpback whales make their way along the east coast of Australia every winter and spring. These majestic creatures migrate from the chilly feeding grounds of Antarctica to the warmer subtropical waters off Queensland to mate and give birth. They then return south with their calves. On the way, they pass Byron Bay, Australia’s most easterly point. That’s why we have one of the very best vantage points to see so many of them making this epic trip!

The migration begins in May and continues through to November, with peak sightings typically around June and July as they head north, and again from September to October on their way back.

The Best Whale-Watching Spots

To get the most out of your Byron Bay Humpback Whale migration experience, try these vantage points:

  • Cape Byron Lighthouse – Just 30 minutes from Aurora House, this iconic headland is Byron Bay’s most famous whale-watching location. From its elevated position, you’ll often spot whales breaching, tail-slapping, or cruising past in pods.

  • Pat Morton Lookout, Lennox Head – A picturesque 25-minute drive south of Byron, this clifftop lookout offers sweeping views of the Pacific and frequent whale sightings.

  • Ballina’s Lighthouse Beach and Flat Rock – These quieter locations are great for a relaxed beach day with a chance of seeing whales not far from shore.

Make It an Experience: Local Whale Watching Tours

If you’re after a closer encounter, several local operators offer unforgettable guided tours:

  • Out Of The Blue Adventures (Ballina) – Eco-certified tours led by marine biologists.

  • Wild Byron – Small group safaris run by local marine experts.

  • Blue Bay Whale Watching – Departs from Brunswick Heads for an intimate view of the whales aboard the “Bay Warrior.”

Whether you’re on a coastal trail or aboard a boat, each whale encounter is awe-inspiring.
