A Byron Bay elopement for Jaz and James! This little micro-wedding was held on the top deck of Beach Suites, Byron Bay. We are overlooking the ocean with the world famous dive site of Julian rocks in the background- heaven!

James and Jaz met whilst working in the Sydney corporate world, where they quickly developed a friendship and a bond that turned into love. They came up to Byron with just a few close family members. This of course included their beloved English Cocker Spaniel Elizabeth who was ‘best dog’ on the day. 🙂
After the short and sweet elopement ceremony, they had a dinner booked for all in Byron. With the number of amazing food venues we have here I’m sure they had a fabulous meal! What a perfect celebration for this couple. Best friends, partners-in-life, and now newlyweds! And what an honour it was to be their celebrant.
Thinking about eloping in Byron Bay? Here are some of the most common questions I get from couples planning a barefoot celebration by the sea:
FAQs
Question: Can we legally elope in Byron Bay even if we are tourists?
Answer: Yes — elopements in Byron Bay are 100% legal as long as you follow the Australian marriage requirements. That includes lodging your Notice of Intended Marriage at least one month before the date and having an authorised celebrant (like me!) to officiate and lodge your paperwork. See more about getting legally married as a tourist in Australia HERE.
Question: How many guests can we have at an elopement?
Answer: You only need two legal witnesses, but you’re welcome to include a small circle of family and friends. Some couples choose to have just their photographer and celebrant present — it’s all about what feels right for you.
Question: Do we need a permit to get married outdoors in Byron Bay?
Answer: Often, yes — especially if you’re planning to elope on a beach or in a park. I can help guide you through the council permit process and suggest beautiful spots that are ceremony-friendly and accessible.
Question: Where’s the best beach to elope in Byron Bay?
Answer: Broken Head, Wategos, Little Wategos, The Pass and North Belongil are all beautiful, private-feeling spots. I recommend coming to Byron Bay a couple of days prior to your elopement and checking out the beaches. go at the same time as your wedding ceremony will be to check what the tides and the sun are doing and you’ll be more confident of your choice!
