Barefoot at Broken Weddings in Byron Bay
‘Barefoot at Broken’ is one of those rare places where barefoot luxury meets heartfelt simplicity. Tucked away in the coastal rainforest of Broken Head, this stunning beachfront property is perfect for couples wanting a private, personal, and naturally beautiful place to say their I Dos.

Real Weddings at Barefoot at Broken and Why I Loved Them All
💕 Marisa and Sean
A Wallaby Witnesses the I Dos
This beautiful couple eloped from Bali, with just two witnesses — Marisa’s mum who flew in from Germany, and their photographer, Sam. As they stood on the windswept beach saying their vows, a wallaby peeked out to watch. Quintessentially Aussie, and totally perfect for these two who were blown away by the moment.

💕 Sydney and Connor
A Forest Walk, Family Vows & Dolphin Guests
Sydney and Connor walked from their villa, through the rainforest, and straight onto the sand to get married with their two gorgeous kids and a few other family members watching. As they exchanged vows, I spotted a pod of dolphins right behind them — and though I couldn’t interrupt the moment, we all watched them play in the waves afterwards. It was magic!

💕 Lisa and Alex
Seashell Proposals
Alex proposed with a seashell metaphor (yes, really!): that we’re all like misshapen shells — imperfect but still beautiful. Lisa said yes (obviously), and their ceremony was full of love, laughter and pure connection. “Personal, fun, and memorable,” Lisa said in her review — thank you Lisa!
💕 Jenna and Tom
UK Couple, Candlelit Ceremony & Sand Ritual
All the way from Manchester, Jenna and Tom had a garden ceremony with just three of us present — myself, Carly their photographer-slash-witness, and a second witness I brought along. Tea light candles lined their aisle, and they shared a sand ceremony they now keep on their shelf in the UK — a daily reminder of that peaceful, love-filled day.

💕 Zoie and Nathan
Big Rigs & Speedway Sparks
Zoie and Nathan did not stay at Barefoot at Broken for their accommodation, but got married on the beautiful Broken Head beach. They first met at the Alexandra truck, ute and rod show — and their ceremony reflected their fun, grounded energy. Their first date continued to the speedway, so yeah… sparks flew early!
💕 Siannan and Daniel
From Ice Bucket Challenges to Forever
They met in 2014, the year of Kim & Kanye, ‘Happy’ by Pharrell, and the ALS ice bucket challenge. But the most iconic event of all? Their first meeting — which kicked off a love story for the ages. Their ceremony at Barefoot was full of laughs, memories, and a few happy tears.
💕 Rachel and Penny
This elopement was extra special for me seeing as I am friends with both Rachel and Penny! Before marriage equality came into law, Rachel and Penny had a commitment ceremony that was for all intents and purposes a marriage, just without the legal document. I was thrilled to be asked to provide them with that document some years later!

💕 Briony and Kegan
Along with a handful of family and friends, Briony and Kegan sealed the deal under a beautifully simple arbour on Broken Head. beach.

Why I Love Being a Celebrant for Barefoot at Broken Byron Bay
I could rave about this venue forever, but here’s what stands out for me:
-
Couples can stay onsite and literally walk from their villa to the ceremony on the beach, then back for a privately catered dinner. They can also use their villa as a back up wet weather option.
-
The forest-to-beach walk is both beautiful and a wonderful way to build the anticipation for the couple and guests as they make their way to the ceremony space.
-
There’s flexibility — elopements, micro-weddings, garden ceremonies, beach ceremonies… it all works
-
The vibe is relaxed but still luxe — perfect for my dream couples

FAQs
Can we legally get married at Broken Head Beach?
Yes — Broken Head Beach is a public location, so you can absolutely have a legal wedding ceremony there. Just make sure to apply for a beach wedding permit through Byron Shire Council if required, and factor in accessibility and weather backup options.
Do we need a permit to get married at Broken Head?
In most cases, yes. If you’re having a formal setup or more than a few guests, Crown Lands may require a permit for your beach wedding at Broken. It’s always best to check directly with the council and apply early to secure your preferred time and spot.
What’s the best time of day for a wedding at Broken Head?
Golden hour (an hour before sunset) is perfect — softer light, fewer beachgoers, and a relaxed, romantic vibe. Early morning can also be beautiful and quieter, especially in warmer months.
Can we have our reception nearby after the ceremony?
Definitely! While Broken Head is ideal for barefoot ceremonies, many couples head to nearby venues or private properties for their reception — giving you the best of both worlds.
What should we tell our guests to prepare for a beach wedding?
Let them know it’s a beach ceremony — so they can dress appropriately (think flat shoes or barefoot), bring sunnies or a hat, and be ready for sand and sun. You might also suggest they arrive early to park and walk down to the ceremony location.
Is Barefoot at Broken a good backup option for wet weather?
Absolutely. If you’re staying at Barefoot at Broken, the venue itself is the perfect backup plan for wet weather. With its open, breezy layout and gorgeous covered areas, it’s ideal for hosting a beautiful ceremony rain, hail, or shine — without compromising on views or vibe.
