An Intimate Wedding at Barefoot at Broken Head

Some weddings are all about the big party, and they are so much fun and unforgettable!
Others are unforgettable in a different way. They are about slowing down, taking it all in over a number of days and spending uninterrupted time with the people who matter most.
That was exactly the approach Gina and Matt took when they planned their beautiful wedding at Barefoot at Broken Head, just south of Byron Bay.
Instead of a traditional one-day celebration, they invited just six of their closest friends to stay with them at the stunning villa for several days, turning their wedding into a relaxed holiday filled with laughter, connection and unforgettable memories.
Why Barefoot at Broken Head Is Such a Special Wedding Venue
Barefoot at Broken Head is a villa nestled in rainforest and scrub behind the dunes of Broken Head and Tallows beach.
The villa feels completely private and peaceful. A walking track winds through the coastal forest before opening onto one of the most spectacular beaches in the Byron Bay region.
For Gina and Matt, that walk became part of the experience itself. Guests wandered through the forest before arriving at a beautifully styled beach ceremony, complete with an arbour, bench seating and a signing table overlooking the ocean. Then, Gina emerged from the forest on the arm of a dear friend, and walked toward her groom.
Surfers in the background, dolphins frolicking in the water and the sound of the waves crashing on a deserted beach made for a very special setting for a wedding!
A Ceremony Filled With Heart
With only six guests, there was no pressure on the bride and groom to entertain hundreds of people or stick to a strict timeline. Instead, everyone was able to simply be present.
The ceremony was full of genuine laughter, heartfelt emotion and plenty of happy tears. Those are often my favourite ceremonies as a celebrant—when couples create a space where everyone feels completely comfortable to laugh one minute and reach for the tissues the next.
Small weddings have a wonderful way of making every moment feel more personal, and Gina and Matt’s ceremony was the perfect example.
Straight Into the Ocean… Wedding Clothes and All!
Most newlyweds carefully protect their wedding outfits after the ceremony.
Not Gina and Matt.
As soon as the formalities were over, they ran straight into the ocean wearing their wedding clothes.
The result?
Some absolutely incredible photographs by Sean Reefman capturing pure joy, with the waves rolling in around them and huge smiles that say everything about the kind of day they wanted to create.
It was spontaneous, carefree and completely unforgettable!
Champagne on the Beach
Every guest was given their own bottle of champagne to celebrate.
Before long, the beach became one giant celebration as champagne sprayed through the air while everyone laughed together with the ocean at their feet.
With surfers catching waves in the background and the late afternoon light reflecting off the water, it created the kind of wedding photographs that can’t be staged.

Bubbles Laughter and Beach Magic
One of my favourite additions to the day was the bubble guns.
As Gina and Matt walked along the beach together as newlyweds, their guests filled the air with thousands of bubbles, creating a magical backdrop for some truly beautiful photographs.
Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that produce the most memorable images.
The bubbles added movement, fun and a sense of celebration while keeping the relaxed beach atmosphere that suited the day perfectly.
Why Intimate Weddings Are Becoming So Popular
More and more couples are choosing quality time over large guest lists.
Rather than trying to spend thirty seconds with every guest at a reception, intimate weddings allow couples to genuinely connect with everyone who has travelled to celebrate with them. Gina even had special key rings made up for each guest that read ‘thank you for being a part of my journey’.
Turning the wedding into a multi-day experience also means the celebration doesn’t disappear in the blink of an eye.
Instead, there’s time for shared meals, morning coffees, beach walks and conversations that become just as memorable as the ceremony itself.
Gina and Matt’s wedding was a beautiful reminder that your wedding doesn’t have to follow tradition to be meaningful.
